Simu Liu criticizes the comparison of Asian fans during the NBA All-Star game
Simu Liu disliked being compared to an Asian fan during the “celebrity-like” segment at Friday’s NBA Celebrity All-Star Game.
“I had a great time, but it wasn’t fun,” “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” star, 33, tweeted in response to a picture of him side by side and a fan displayed on a jumbotron.
People on social media were also quick to criticize the choice of a similar one.
“Let’s Pick a Random Asian” smdh,” one fan wrote on Twitterone sec wrote another“It’s so wrong in so many ways.”
AND third explained why the exclamation was problematic, noting, “The problem is that they have no similar characteristics other than being Asian. Usually when they do this bit there is SOMETHING to connect. Cut, beard, build, whatever. It literally plays on the “all Asians look the same” stereotype.
As the backlash began to escalate, Liu took to Twitter again to explain his first tweet, blaming the cameraman and not the NBA.
“To be completely clear, the entire organizational and operational team surrounding the star was just absolutely brilliant for me and all my friends,” One True Loves actor tweeted on Saturday.
“It was just one person with a camera. and no disrespect to my man in the videotron! he’s great, we’re just not alike.”
Page Six contacted the actor and NBA representatives for comment, but received no immediate response to the publication.
Friday night Liu and Team Dwyane [Wade] was victorious over Ryan Smith’s all-star team.
